Business Blunder
Parker Pen
The company was marketing a new ballpoint pen and there catchy slogan “it won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you” but in Spain they used the wrong verb for “to embarrass” so the slogan came out as “it will not leak in your pocket and make your pregnant.”
Electrolux
A Scandinavian campaign used the phrase “nothing sucks like Electrolux” by accident and this blew up in the public.
Kentucky Fried Chicken
KFC has always had the slogan “finger licking good” but they ran into a little bit of a dilemma when they realized that the slogan translated into Chinese means eat your fingers off.

Productivity of Workers and Conditions in Factories
- Generally, the United States of America have better everything when it comes to living conditions and opportunities for jobs than most other places around the world. The video that we viewed yesterday at the end of class showed us how disgusting the toy shops for disney are in other parts of the world including (China, Hong Kong ). In those Disney toy shops, the workers all said that their are false wages that are said to be the wages but are actually higher than the real wages just so that these factories and companies do not get in trouble. The main difference between the two countries is the overseeing of the conditions in the factories. The american countries make sure that owners of factories and the people in charge are following the rules and that they are not exploiting the workers. In Hong Kong, there are several accounts where workers need to work several hours overtime just to earn enough money for them to survive. Also in the U.S. they make sure that the factories don't get too hot or too cold that it affects the workers in severally negative ways. In hong Kong and other countries around the world, if someone is working overtime, they can work to the point of exhaustion in a overheated factory and this happening over and over again is extremely detrimental to one's health. Then if you are a parent and your are working all day then you don't have time to take care of the rest of your family and this obviously is no just way to live. In the United States although factory jobs are not very joyful or grand, they are more regulated so that the conditions for the workers are manageable and they are paid at the expected rate. In Hong Kong wages are many times lower than they are said to be and the owners of the companies when inspected, pay the workers to lie and say that the conditions are good and they are being paid correctly.
- I believe that a happier worker would produce the amount of work expected for them because they are in a good position but if you have an upset worker who is working countless hours just to survive, their productivity will most certainly be lower than that of someone who is well rested and has a comfortable life style. In the video that we viewed in class, there are several instances where women sleep at their jobs and skip a meal each day just because they need to make more money. It is absolutely disgusting how badly the conditions and treatment of these workers in third world countries are. But it is not like these people can just leave their jobs because of the crappy conditions. If they do quit, how will they survive? How could they possibly support a family? Their only option is to keep living this unhealthy lifestyle and gaining this extremely insufficient pay.
- Altered Seasons : I chose this company because I found it very interesting and impressive that this was founded by Kelly Reddington when he was only 14 years old! That is something that young entrepreneurs should model themselves after because it is extremely impressive that while still in middle school someone could be that intelligent and confident in their own company.

ways to do things in different countries
Japan:
Meet
When you meet someone in Japan you bow and say “Ohayō gozaimasu”, “Konnichiwa” or “Konbanwa” depending on the time of the day.
Depart
Most people use the phrase sorosoro when they are about to leave.
Accept a gift
When giving a gift most people say "Tsumaranai mono desu ga ..." which means something along the lines of “please accept this gift”
Share business cards
After you have greeted each other and met each other and bowed, you usually hold the business card Japanese side up with two hands for respect.
Spain:
Meet
In spain there is a long list of what to do when greeting someone, you must shake their hand, hug them, kiss them on the cheek, and pat them on the back. This is considered proper meeting etiquette when meeting a new person in spain.
Depart
When leaving someone or a group of people in spain you should shake hands with everyone including children before saying goodbye.
Accept a gift
When accepting a gift in spain you should open it immediately and right in front of the gift giver.
Share business cards
Have your front side in spanish and the back side in english with a solid cardstock paper. Keep them organized in a nice card holder and give them to future business friends with a smile on your face.
France:
Meet
There are several ways to greet people in france but one of the most rare and I think the best is “Faire la bise” which is a kiss on the cheek.
Depart
Au Revoir is a very common way of saying goodbye for people in france. They usually leave with a smile and a wave as well.
Accept a gift
Never include business card with a gift but giving gifts after a dinner is very common. After receiving a gift always say thank you “Je vous remercie”.
Share business cards
Right after you greet someone you should put out a nicely organized business card with french on the front and english on the back and give it to the person.
